OMEGA FATTY ACIDS A.K.A. FISH OIL
There are several products on the market today that offer essential fatty acids which are associated with certain health benefits when taken in the appropriate amounts. The fatty acids are helpful in the normal functions of the heart and brain as well as in their normal growth and development. For increased heart protection, the American Heart Association recommends the consumption of omega-3 fatty acids from fish/plant sources at least twice weekly. Fish found to be high in omega-3 fatty acids include fattier fish such as tuna, mackerel, and salmon. In particular, omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the risk of an irregular heartbeat, lower triglyceride levels (a portion of your “bad” cholesterol), and decrease the build-up of blockage in your arteries. The preferred method for obtaining omega-3 fatty acids is through diet alone; however dietary supplements would also be an option.
Omega-6 fatty acids are another component which contribute to heart health. Omega-6 fatty acids are found in some vegetable oils, nuts and seeds. The consumption of omega-6 fatty acids helps reduce diabetes risk and lower blood pressure.
There are numerous omega-3 fatty acid supplements on the market that work either alone or in combination with omega-6 fatty acids. Although these supplements are recommended for overall improved health; it is important to check with your doctor/pharmacist for any preexisting medical conditions and any adverse interactions with current medications being taken. The recommendation for consumption of omega fatty acids beyond diet varies depending on medical conditions; therefore it is important to discuss with your doctor the appropriate dosage.
